Denim Day

Denim Day is an international initiative celebrated annually on the last Wednesday of April. The day aims to raise awareness about sexual violence, its consequences, support for victims and combat the culture of blame.

History
The initiative was launched in 1999 by Peace Over Violence in response to a high-profile court case in Italy:

1992. An 18-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. The man was convicted of rape.

1998. The Supreme Court of Italy overturned the conviction, declaring that since the girl was wearing tight jeans, which the court ruled could not be removed without consent, it was not rape.

The decision caused public outrage: women in the Italian parliament wore jeans in protest. The gesture became a symbol of support for victims of sexual violence and the fight against stereotypes.

Wearing jeans. People around the world wear jeans or other denim on this day in solidarity with victims of sexual violence.

Educational programs: Lectures, workshops, and discussions are organized to dispel myths about sexual violence, explain laws, and provide information on support for victims.
